Is the thermostat actually the problem?
- The system does not respond to the setting, or responds intermittently.
- The room temperature and the displayed temperature disagree consistently.
- Scheduling behaves unpredictably.
- The thermostat is in a poor location: in direct sun, above a supply register, or on an exterior wall, all of which give it a misleading picture of the house.
Will any thermostat work with my system?
Not every thermostat works with every system. Heat pumps with auxiliary heat, multi-stage equipment and systems needing a common wire all have requirements. We check what your system needs rather than fitting whatever is in the box.
Does thermostat placement matter?
A capable thermostat in a bad position will still read the house wrongly. Where it sits is part of the job, not an afterthought.
What happens after installation?
We confirm the system responds correctly in each mode it supports, rather than assuming that because the display lit up the job is done.
Repair or replace: how we weigh it
| What we look at | Points toward repair | Points toward replacement |
|---|---|---|
| What failed | A wear item such as a capacitor, contactor or fan motor | Compressor, leaking evaporator coil or cracked heat exchanger |
| Repair history | First real fault the system has had | Repairs stacking up across recent seasons |
| Condition of the rest | Remaining equipment looks sound | Several components visibly tired |
| Cost comparison | Repair sits well below replacement cost | Repair approaches a meaningful share of replacement |
| Comfort history | System kept the house comfortable until now | It never really kept up, which may be sizing or ductwork |
No formula decides this. We look at your equipment and explain what we find. See the repair or replace guide for the longer version.
Common questions
Will a smart thermostat lower my bills?
It can help if it changes how the system runs when you are out or asleep. It will not compensate for a system that is faulty or ducts that leak, and we are not going to promise a figure.
Can I put any thermostat on my system?
No. Heat pumps with auxiliary heat, multi-stage equipment and systems needing a common wire all have specific requirements.
My thermostat reads a different temperature to the room. Why?
Often placement. Direct sun, a nearby supply register or an exterior wall all give it a misleading reading.
Do you install thermostats I have already bought?
Tell us the model when you get in touch and we will confirm whether it is compatible with your system before we come out.
