Where does a mini-split make sense?
- Additions. Extending ductwork into a new space is not always practical or effective.
- Garages and workshops. Spaces the main system was never designed to serve.
- Bonus rooms over garages. Notorious for being too hot in summer and too cold in winter, because they are exposed on more sides than a normal room and sit at the end of a long duct run.
- A single room that never behaves, where fixing the duct system would be a much larger job.
What does installation involve?
An outdoor unit, one or more indoor heads, and a small penetration connecting them. No ductwork, which is the point. Placement of the indoor head matters for how the room actually feels, so it is worth thinking about rather than defaulting to whichever wall is easiest.
When is a mini-split not the answer?
If several rooms across the house are uncomfortable, the problem is more likely the duct system or the equipment serving it. Adding mini-splits room by room would be an expensive way to work around that. See ductwork.

Common questions
Is a mini-split good for a room over the garage?
It is one of the situations they suit best. Those rooms are exposed on more sides than a normal room and usually sit at the end of a long duct run, so they rarely behave on the main system.
Do mini-splits heat as well as cool?
Yes. They work as heat pumps, providing both.
How many indoor heads do I need?
It depends on the space and how it is laid out. One head does not serve rooms it cannot reach, so the layout matters more than the total square footage.
Should I use a mini-split instead of fixing my ducts?
If one room is the problem, a mini-split can be a sensible answer. If several rooms are uncomfortable, the duct system is the more likely cause and mini-splits would be an expensive way around it.
