When is full duct replacement the right call?
- Duct that has deteriorated throughout rather than failed in one place.
- Systems where so much needs repair and resizing that replacing is better value.
- Old duct in poor condition being carried over to new equipment, where it would undermine the new system.
- Material that has reached the end of its life across the house.
What does duct replacement cost?
The priced after an assessment range published on our pricing page covers duct repair and redesign. It does not cover full replacement. We are saying that plainly because it would be easy to imply otherwise and we would rather not.
A full replacement is scoped and priced after an assessment of your home.
Should ducts be replaced with the equipment?
If you are already replacing the system, it is worth deciding about the ducts at the same time. Access is already open and the equipment can be matched to a duct system that will actually carry what it needs to.
What do you assess?
The condition and material of the existing duct, the layout and sizing, returns, insulation, and access through attics and crawl spaces, which affects the work involved more than people expect.
Repair or replace: how we weigh it
| What we look at | Points toward repair | Points toward replacement |
|---|---|---|
| What failed | A wear item such as a capacitor, contactor or fan motor | Compressor, leaking evaporator coil or cracked heat exchanger |
| Repair history | First real fault the system has had | Repairs stacking up across recent seasons |
| Condition of the rest | Remaining equipment looks sound | Several components visibly tired |
| Cost comparison | Repair sits well below replacement cost | Repair approaches a meaningful share of replacement |
| Comfort history | System kept the house comfortable until now | It never really kept up, which may be sizing or ductwork |
No formula decides this. We look at your equipment and explain what we find. See the repair or replace guide for the longer version.
Common questions
Does the priced after an assessment range cover full duct replacement?
No. That range covers duct repair and redesign. Full replacement is a larger job, scoped and priced after an assessment.
Should I replace ducts at the same time as the system?
It is worth deciding together. Access is already open, and new equipment connected to poor duct will not deliver what it should.
How long does duct replacement take?
It depends on the size of the house and the access. We will tell you what to expect before the work is agreed rather than after.
Can you replace only part of the ductwork?
Often yes. Where only part of the system has failed, partial replacement combined with redesign is frequently the better value route.
