What goes wrong with residential ductwork?

  • Disconnected runs. A duct that has come apart in an attic or crawl space delivers conditioned air into that space instead of your room.
  • Leaking joints and seams. Individually small, collectively significant.
  • Crushed or kinked flexible duct. Common where duct has been walked on, stored against, or pulled around a tight corner.
  • Failed insulation. Duct running through a hot attic loses a great deal without it.

How do duct problems show up inside the house?

Rooms that never reach temperature, weak airflow at particular registers, longer run times, and a system that seems undersized for the house when it is not.

Can you diagnose ducts over the phone?

Duct problems are specific to the building. The same symptom comes from a disconnected run in one house and a layout problem in another, and only one of those is a repair.

What will this cost?

Duct repair and redesign is priced after an assessment, because access and the amount of duct involved change the job completely. That range does not cover full duct replacement. A typical range, not a quote.

Repair or replace: how we weigh it

What we look at Points toward repair Points toward replacement
What failed A wear item such as a capacitor, contactor or fan motor Compressor, leaking evaporator coil or cracked heat exchanger
Repair history First real fault the system has had Repairs stacking up across recent seasons
Condition of the rest Remaining equipment looks sound Several components visibly tired
Cost comparison Repair sits well below replacement cost Repair approaches a meaningful share of replacement
Comfort history System kept the house comfortable until now It never really kept up, which may be sizing or ductwork

No formula decides this. We look at your equipment and explain what we find. See the repair or replace guide for the longer version.

Common questions

How do I know if my ducts are leaking?

Rooms that never reach temperature, weak airflow at particular vents, and longer run times are the usual signs. Visible disconnection in an attic or crawl space is the obvious one.

What does duct repair cost?

Typically priced after an assessment for repair and redesign work, depending on scope and access. Full replacement is a larger job priced separately.

Will fixing my ducts lower my bills?

If the ducts are losing a meaningful amount, addressing it means less waste. We are not going to put a percentage on it, because it depends entirely on what we find.

Is duct repair the same as duct cleaning?

No. Repair addresses damage and leaks. We do not currently offer duct cleaning.
