Can your existing system actually handle more house? Adding conditioned space adds load. If the system was already marginal on the hottest days, extending it into an addition makes every room slightly worse.
When extending the ducted system makes sense
- The existing equipment has genuine spare capacity.
- The addition is close to existing duct, with a sensible route.
- Return air can be provided properly, not just supply.
- You would rather have one system to maintain.
When a mini-split makes more sense
- The existing system is already working hard.
- The addition is far from the equipment, or the duct route is awkward or impossible.
- The space has different needs: a sunroom, a garage conversion, a room over a garage.
- The addition will be used on a different schedule and you would rather condition it independently.
- Running duct would mean significant structural work.
Independent control is underrated
An addition on its own system can be set differently or switched off entirely. On a single zoned ducted system it shares a thermostat with whichever rooms it was tied into, which is a common source of ongoing annoyance.
What we would look at
The size and exposure of the addition, the capacity and condition of the existing equipment, whether the duct system has anything spare, the practical route, and how you intend to use the space.
Common questions
Is a mini-split cheaper than extending ductwork?
Often, particularly where running duct would mean structural work. Both get scoped after looking at the space rather than assumed.
Can my existing system handle an addition?
Only if it has genuine spare capacity. Extending a system that is already marginal makes the whole house slightly worse.
Do mini-splits heat as well as cool?
Yes, they work as heat pumps and do both.
What about a room over a garage?
That is one of the situations mini-splits suit best. Those rooms are exposed on more sides and usually sit at the end of a long duct run.
