The distinction that matters
If the whole house struggles, look at the equipment. If most of the house is fine and specific rooms are not, look at delivery. Those are different problems with different fixes, and it is worth knowing which you have before spending money.
Why particular rooms suffer
- Distance from the equipment. Rooms at the end of long duct runs receive less.
- Rooms over garages. Exposed above, below and often on two sides, while sitting at the end of a long run.
- Upstairs rooms. Heat rises, and a system balanced for the whole house may never win upstairs in summer.
- Additions and conversions. Frequently served by duct extended as an afterthought.
- Bonus rooms and rooms over porches. Same exposure problem.
- Inadequate return air. A room with supply but no path back for the air will not circulate properly.
Things worth trying first
Check the register in the room is open and not covered by furniture or a rug. Check the return vents elsewhere are not blocked. Closing vents in other rooms to force air to the problem room usually makes things worse, because it raises pressure in the duct system and increases leakage.
What actually fixes it
Depending on the cause: duct repair where runs are damaged or disconnected, duct redesign where the layout was never right, or a mini-split for a single stubborn space where reworking the ducts would be a much larger job.
Common questions
Why is my upstairs so much hotter than downstairs?
Heat rises, upstairs rooms take more solar gain through the roof, and duct runs upstairs are usually longer. A system balanced for the whole house often cannot win that fight in summer.
Should I close vents in other rooms?
Generally no. It raises pressure in the duct system and tends to increase leakage, which makes the overall problem worse.
Will a bigger system fix an uneven house?
Usually not. If the cause is delivery, a larger system pushes air through the same restricted path and often short cycles as well.
Is a mini-split a good fix for one room?
For a single stubborn room, often yes, particularly over a garage. For several rooms, the duct system is the more likely cause.
