Everywhere, or just one room?
Weak airflow at every register points at the system. Weak airflow in one or two rooms points at those runs. See uneven room temperatures for the second case.
Causes, roughly in order
- A clogged filter. Free to check, and by far the most common cause. A filter left too long can restrict flow enough to freeze the coil.
- Blocked return vents. Furniture against a return starves the system of the air it needs to move.
- Undersized return. Some houses never had enough return capacity, which limits everything.
- A frozen evaporator coil. Ice physically blocks the path.
- A dirty coil. Loaded fins restrict flow even without ice.
- A failing blower motor or a fan wheel loaded with dirt.
- Crushed, kinked or disconnected duct. Common in attics and crawl spaces.
- Closed dampers left over from a previous attempt at balancing.
What to check yourself
The filter, and whether returns are blocked. That is the sensible limit. If the filter was badly clogged, replace it and see whether airflow recovers over the next day.
Why weak airflow matters
It is not only a comfort issue. Restricted airflow causes frozen coils, trips safeties, causes short cycling and makes the equipment work harder than it was designed to.
Common questions
Why is airflow weak from all my vents?
Most often a clogged filter or blocked returns. Beyond that, a frozen or dirty coil, a failing blower, or duct that cannot carry the required airflow.
Can a dirty filter really cause this much trouble?
Yes. A badly clogged filter restricts flow enough to freeze a coil and trip safeties, which then looks like a much larger fault.
How often should I change my filter?
It depends on the filter and the house. Check it monthly and change it when it looks loaded rather than working to a fixed date.
Could my ducts be the problem?
Yes, particularly crushed flexible duct or disconnected runs in attics and crawl spaces. That needs looking at rather than guessing.
